What is the Export Marketing Development Grant (EMDG)?
The Export Marketing Development Grant (EMDG) is a program administered by AusTrade that aims to help small and medium-sized Australian businesses export overseas or continue to export overseas (not including New Zealand, Iran, Russia, Belarus, or North Korea) by reimbursing up to 50% of eligible overseas marketing/promotion expenditure.
The EMDG tiers are as follows:
Tier | Maximum Agreement Duration (Years) | Tier Description | Capped Grant Amount (as of Round 3) per Year | Maximum Grant Amount per Year |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 2 Years | New Exporters who are ready to export however, have not exported overseas yet. | $12,000 | $40,000 |
2 | 3 Years | Exporters who plan to expand their presence in current overseas markets or new overseas markets (not including New Zealand, Iran, Russia, Belarus, or North Korea). | $20,000 | $80,000 |
3 | 3 Years | Exporters who are making a strategic shift in their exporting. For example, completely new product or service, new overseas country, or region, etc. | $30,000 | $150,000 |
Representative Body | 3 Years | Representative Body promoting interest of members seeking to export | $45,000 | $150,000 |
Grant amounts vary for each round. This is because the EMDG is an eligibility-based, demand-driven program which is subject to limited funds.
The EMDG Application process is as follows:
AusTrade open EMDG applications via AusTrade’s online portal during a specific date period (Last round was between 15th of March 2023 to 14th of April 2023).
Applicants must provide the following in their EMDG application to AusTrade:
- The details of their product(s) and service(s) and evidence of their ‘Australian origin’.
- A comprehensive ‘Plan to Market’.
- Overseas marketing/promotion expenditure budget.
AusTrade will then determine if you qualify under the EMDG Guidelines. If accepted, AusTrade will require you to sign a ‘Grant Agreement’ which sets out the terms of what is required by you to receive the EMDG payments (the amount per year and timing of payments will be determined by AusTrade). To receive EMDG payments, ‘Milestone Reports’ must be complete and submitted to AusTrade at specific dates determined in the ‘Grant Agreement’.
